Hello, if you sign up for Instant Ink you pay per page not per amount of ink you use, with a savings of 50%! This printer comes with 6 months of free ink plus an additional 1 year of warranty through the HP+ program. If you choose to forego the free ink you will pay $40.99 for the XL cartridge which yields 825 pages of black, and $22.99 for the color cartridges which yields 825 pages for each color cartridge.
