Yes, it will print with low ink in the color cartridges. If the color cartridges are out, you can still print in black and white, but you have to go over to the printer, and choose that option after you send the job to the printer.

The answer to both questions is Yes. Changing from color to black only printing is in the printer options available every time you print a document

You can go to the setting of the printer and tell it to print in grayscale and it will use the black ink only. You must remember if you want to print in color you will have to change he setting back to color.

Yes and yes. The ink indicator shows I need to replace one of the colors but it is still printing.

You can set it to print in black and white from the printer options or setup, and this will only use black ink. But this is done in the hardware. Usually windows will remember your print settings except on a reboot, etc. may have to change it again.
