It will print if one color is low but it is not advisable, because then the printing needle will dry up and it may cost you more in the long run.

For the first one, if one of the colors is _low_ yes, it will print, but if it's out, then it won't. And I don't know why people are complaining about firmware. Honestly, I suspect that it's because those people don't understand why the firmware needs to be updated periodically.
