“Does the printer paper need to be manually switched between photo stock and plain paper when wanting to change printing from one type to another?”

• It does not have a second tray for the photo paper, so you'll need to manually swap them out.

• I personally have printed without switching from one to the other and it work fine but it’s alway recommended to pick the right paper for the job.
