The black stick is for Dell laptops. I plugged it into my Mac and it works like a charm. I don’t know if the usb-c with thunderbolt port is the reason it doesn’t work but I had no issues. You don’t want to move it around a lot either if you’re having connection issues too. Hope that’s helps m8

If it was only the USB-C, it would be extremely prone to breaking if it was bumped or twisted in anyway. I had some faults with this as well and wouldn’t really recommend this product. Hope my answer helped!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There is another Hyperdrive that has two ports that will plug in to either side of your Macbook offering much better stability and choice. It's about $10 more. The one you seem to be describing with the black stick is to be inserted in the 3.5 mm headphone jack and the USB-C port to give it stability.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The black stick is for the headphone jack which can be found on the right side of the new MacBook pros. One of the draw backs is the single usb-c connector vs. the other usb-c hubs that has 2 connectors. Make sure the connector/hub is pushed in all the way.
