• It depends on what type of jack your laptop has. If it has a single TRRS jack, you would use the 3.5mm jack by itself. If it has separate microphone and speaker jacks, you would use the splitter.

• The shorter cord has the ability to plug into a laptop (combined input/output); the longer cord extends the shorter cord and splits the mic/headphone jacks.
