The tones gradually get louder. It has radio as well so you can turn on the volume up really loud. You can turn the volume loud and have it work with the Bluetooth device. If your a very heavy sleeper the tones may not be loud enough.

My youngest (8yrs) used to sleep through my other son's phone alarm. With this alarm clock he wakes right up. It's so loud that it also wakes me up in the morning and I'm down the hall.
