“Wastebasket Lining The instructions say not to use a bag to line the wastebasket. What is the reason for that? I have some 4-gallon small trash bags that I think would fit the wastebasket well and make disposal of the shredded material more convenient. However, I don't want to try it if that would really damage the unit or be a safety hazard.”

I believe it is because the lid has to fit tightly on the basket. If there is a small gap from the garbage bag being folded over the basket, it may not work due to the safety feature. I think the bag could get pulled into the shredders also and jam the machine.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.At first I thought that the shredder teeth, although slightly recessed, could catch on the bag (if loose) and jam the shredder. But then I remembered that the lid has a safety switch to signify the lid is safely closed before it allows it to operate. So, safety hazard is your answer. The bag could prevent the switch from working. Don't tempt accidents.

Please try again later.Perhaps they put that in the instructions as a suggestion, in order to make it easier/less "messy" for people to empty the shredder easier and without having little tiny pieces of paper fall onto the floor when doing so. I use mine without a bag though.

Please try again later.Its not really a hazard but they have this mechanism that in order for the shredder to work it has to be touching each other , so they may think the bag might cause it not to touch , so the shredder won't shred. I shred the paper then when its full just put it in the trash bag after
