“I picked this up to hopefully back up a couple old drives. When I insert the 3.5" sata the power led goes away and nothing is processing. When I take out the drive, the drive seems to be a bit hot. Do I have a faulty product? Need help troubleshooting.”

Sounds like the drive is faulty. You might try attaching it directly to an eSATA port, or by using a USB-to-SATA cable (the kind that comes with an external storage drive like a WD My Passport or similar). Otherwise, take it to a computer repair shop and ask someone to verify it's working.
