The open box normally indicates either it returned (due to not being the right product the customer needed) or it could mean that the box arrived in store slightly damaged (not the product, just the box was damaged).

Either way, the store won't sell a product that isn't perfect. But because they know it's still new, there is a market for smart shoppers. Companies like Best Buy are smart. Make a smaller profit, but keep a happy customer. All the major retail chains do it.
