I leave my window screen in at about the same distance. The air leaving the exhaust tube is not
hot enough to damage the screen material.

...when you write "4-5 inches back of the exhaust assembly" I am taking that to mean clearance for the exhaust port OUTSIDE of that port...sounds like it will work AND the screen would help keep birds and small animals out of the exhaust port as well as bugs depending on the fineness of the screen mesh...
