“I'm worried about bugs, birds and squirrels coming in through the window vent. Are there any parts I can buy so I can disconnect the hose and place some sort of a barrier in the window vent to prevent things from coming in when not in use?”

I answered my own question... Keep the window screen installed. There's plenty of room.
