“It will run smoothly and then it will just stop, vent open, like it stays on but nothing comes out. Not even fan mode. And then after a little while it comes back on. Normally it goes to fan mode when room is cool enough but it isn’t doing that.”

It's normal for the AC to stop when the unit reaches the temperature setting. Try to select the Fan Cont. (continuous).
