The situation which you are experiencing of some of the programs' imagery not filling up the "entire" screen and where you may see blacked out areas, say, in the left and right vertical columns and/or on the top and bottom of the TV screen "at times" was one of the things which annoyed me most about this TV--and other flat screen TVs I have owned recently and in the past. I just want to offer an "objective" presentation when I provide an answer to your question! The "immediate" solution would be to locate the picture-size (i.e., p-size) button on the TV's remote control and you "could" choose to place the setting on "CINEMA" or whatever else the setting is referred to which will "e-x-p-a-n-d" the imagery to cover as much of the screen as possible. Many of the more classic TV shows have this issue more often; however, it's not exclusive only to those programs! When you do engage in this practice, you will quickly observe that, most likely, it will increase the blurriness and many times significant parts of the actors bodies and scenery will also be taken out of view and the visuals become noticeably distorted (i..e, in terms of expansion). What I have found with this TV is that shows labeled (i.e., after you change the channels on top/right of the screen) as 1080i almost always fill the entire screen and are extremely clear and usually (but not always!) this is true with the broadcasts labeled as 720i. Some of the shows labeled as 480i; however, are many times the more classic shows (but not always!) and these are the ones where most people would feel the need to "e-x-p-a-n-d" the visuals to MAX. Again, many of the shows labeled as 480i do fill the entire screen and the imagery can be really great as well. I only use an over-the-air HDTV antenna where a lot of people have cable TV or they use a streaming device. I also incorporate the use of a laptop connected via HDMI cable to view lots of different types of viewing options from YouTube.com and Bing.com. You would be surprised to learn of all of the "FREE" viewing options out there. I've provided a detailed explanation within the bodies of some of my other product answers for this model TV concerning the connection of a laptop or other PC. It took me some time to arrive at the conclusion that the best viewing experience with this TV is to leave or return the TV to factory default and to leave the picture size set at a steady "WIDE"--all of the time! Of course, returning the TV settings to "factory default" would be like having the need to set up a new TV. I find that the imagery is "not" noticeably distorted when I select the "WIDE" setting (for me, anyway!) and I experience the most consistent viewing experience leaving the picture size set at WIDE all of the time. Broadcast technology has changed so much from the 1950s until now and my experience has been that when I attempted to play around with the "ASPECT RATIO" settings in conjunction with the picture size settings that this made things worse. It's not that this great TV which has so much to offer is to blame--it's the "SOURCE" of these broadcasts. I hope that my answer provides some peace of mind to you Best Buy customer RandD and to other Best Buy customers who occasionally experience a viewing experience that sometimes does not fill the entire screen. The answer I provided is not a "direct" one, but I hope that the explanation I offered will provide owner's of this TV the most consistent/quality TV viewing experience!
