“Does the 50 inch 4k ultra have the same function that requires the input be manually switched to HDMI (to a cable box) in order to bypass when powering up the unit? The 43 inch model several posters have said this must be done using the remote each time.”

There IS a setting on the remote to have it go directly to HDMI (or wherever you want) automatically. It's under the remote's Home button, settings. and as I recall, TV inputs. Call Insignia if you can't figure it out. I'm told the manual should be posted shortly.
