“How long should the unit sit before turning it on after purchasing? I’ve read someplace up to 24 hrs”

I started mine instantly and it has worked fine. The day we purchased it the temp was 95 outside and 77 in our upstairs living room. We plugged it up and it cooled the room off in about 15 minutes.
