Why would a gas dryer draw up to 15 amps? null

A high torque motor can use a lot of current. The 15amp rating is likely an overestimate to be safe.

The type of drying is through gas but the motor and the electronics (power and control buttons) still need to run on electric power...

A 120-volt, 60Hz AC approved electrical service, with a 15 ampere fuse or circuit breaker is required.
