Yes, it worked my work Apple Ipad and was easy to connect. Works great!

If you referring to a mouse pad then yes, it does work without a mouse pad. I use mine on my desk without a mouse pad and work's perfectly. Wouldn't try a glass table, laser might not pick up the surface.
