Hi. Thank you for sharing your inquiry with us. The reason for the labeling is that most music is recorded in stereo, which means it has separate recordings for right and left ears, and this fools our brain into thinking the sound is coming from different places, rather than a single source. Nevertheless, they can still be used the other way around with not much difference regarding sound. Alexander G. - Insignia Support
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. There might be some comfort issues? The shape of the headpieces might not be just an oval? But more important - the on/off, volume AND AUDIO INPUT SELECTOR buttons are only on the right earpiece. So trying to adjust volume might be confusing - which side is it on today. And like I said in a review I just posted - next to the volume control on the headphones is a button to press to select between the 2 inputs (RCA or optical). You'll likely use just 1 input. So if someone accidentally pushes that input selector switch, they will not get sound anymore. They have to remember the equipment has 2 inputs, why the sound suddenly stopped, and where the switch is, etc. Even for non memory impaired people, that's a nuisance to have to remember that. If you only want to hook it up to 1 device / use 1 input? There should be a way to disable the ability to switch between inputs. Knowing that now, I would not buy this device for others next time.
