No, you don't have to buy a new printer to start the program. All you need is a compatible printer. As long as you have one, you can start instant ink at any time.

You will never run out of ink. The year old HP printer I had was not eligible. It was worth the low cost of the printer to be able to take advantage of the monthly ink.
