“I just purchased this to replace a failed Asus mini dock that came with my Asus Q435U laptop. It looks just like the old minidock. However, the Power Delivery part DOES NOT charge my laptop. HDMI works. Should it work? Maybe I just got a bad adapter?”

The power delivery should work only on the USB C port, it probably won't work on the USB 3 port.
