“I hooked up this device to my Directtv box, and I have no control over the resolution. It is displaying in 420 and i cannot change it. Has anyone had this problem?”

You have to use your Directv remote to set the resolution of your Directv box. See the link below https://www.att.com/support/article/directv/KM1348053/
