Yes you can use the right ear bud by itself while connected to your phone. Works fine with my iPhone 7 Plus, should work with the iPhone 8 plus too.

The 65t allow you to use 1 bud at the time and the right bud is the main one. It works too well with my Iphone 4, but the only thing I cannot do is download the app since it requires IOS 10.3 or higher. So yeh, your phone is safe.

They work on the iPhone X so I'm going to assume they also work on the 8. 

You can use the right bud as a single piece. However the volume is on the left piece so you will need to control volume from your iPhone.
