“Are the Detachable Speakers supposed to be borderline on mute? They're extremely quiet it seems entirely pointless to even use them. Are they a gimmick and its mainly supposed to be used as one soundbar or is there an issue with them that can be updated?”

Depends on the show you are watching. Try a Dolby Atmos action movie like Knog Skull Island. They don't do much for a regular TV show. Also check that you have the rear speakers set to high vs low or medium. Same for Atmos, low to high as well. Those settings are in the app.
