Was told i could sync the JBL Link20 to a prepaid verizon samsung Galaxy J3 with unlimited data. When BT searches for the speaker it only shows unamed(letters/numbers) devices. None sync and the message reads unable to connect. Is wifi absolutely needed? null

Try connecting to a WiFi signal first. That's what I did, then set it up for my phone on Bluetooth.

You'll need to set it up through wifi via the Google home app before you'll be able to get the Bluetooth connected.
