I have always cleaned with vinegar and water. I just pour about 1 cup vinegar to 4 cups water and let run through. Then I rinse out the reservoir completely and then a run a complete reservoir of just water through. I’m not sure about the distilled water but I am using bottled water on mine right now due to the winter storm and seem to have no issues.

I've used a 50/50 Vinegar to water mix to descale mine, although you could probably get away with 25/75. There are plenty of YouTube videos showing this process.
I would definitely use distilled or filtered water for the descaling process, but I don't know how using distilled water would make better coffee. The boiling temperature for distilled water may be slightly different from regular water, but I don't think that would make a huge difference.
