“This will be installed on an interior wall under a cabinet. Does this unit have to have vent holes cut and ductwork installed in order to function? Or can the venting system recirculate air right out of the box once it's mounted to the wall?”

There are vents on the top of the unit, along the front. As long as these are not obstructed by your cabinets, you do not need to vent this. The vents in the unit are not visible from the front, so you won't see them.
