“If the controls are hidden while the door is closed/unit running, how do you stop the cycle if you need to add or subtract anything from the load? Just open the door? (that seems risky, water-wise)”

Opening the door stops it, no worries I've been doing that for over 20 years, never an issue. You can reset if need be at that point.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes - just pull open the door. No water issues at all. I've added items to a running cycle often and have had no problems at all. You just need to remember to hit the start button again each time you do in order to resume the cycle.
