This smartlock is hands-free.  It will automatically unlock when your phone gets within range.

We have it setup with a unique passcode that you type in on the keypad. It can use wifi to unlock from your phone, but I can't comment in functionality as we don't have it setup that way. Keypad is nice because you don't need your phone to unlock the door.

I haven't purchased Kwikset's gateway yet but it is my understanding that since you will always be in range with the gateway you probably wouldn't need to keep pulling out your phone to awaken it. Without the gateway 50% of the time I have to unlock the door while sitting in my car in the driveway or as a passenger a block away from my house.
