This drive includes a USB-C cable, which is compatible with the Thunderbolt 3 ports on MacBooks and MacBook Pros from 2016 and later. it also comes with a USB-A cable for connecting to older Macs. The USB-C cable can also be used to connect to a 2018 or 2020 iPad Pros. It can’t connect to older or non-Pro iPads or iPhones.

No you dont NEED thunderbolt. They changed the port from Firewire to Thunderbolt a while ago. Now everything is USBC. If you need a thunderbolt you can get a usbc thunderbolt adapter...But you can move media without a thunderbolt.
