• no the cable is not necessary, but it is faster. both computers need to be on the same network.

• Yes you can transfer using your wireless network. The transfer will be faster if each computer (or one) is directly plugged into your router or network switch.

• Cable is junk. Ends are too small for computers Ethernet ports. If you want to hold both ends in both computers to keep contacted. Sure, buy it. Moving over WiFi is painfully slow. So far I am 70 hours moving a 1.8tb computer. Still only half way done. There used to be a LOT better way to move from one computer to the next. Laplink is a poor way to do this.
