I can't speak for a DVI monitor connection specifically but I did connect to a monitor via VGA using an adapter (the monitor has a DVI input as well, but I went with VGA because the VGA cable came with the monitor and the VGA adapter was less expensive). I did have to install drivers that came on a small CD with the adapter. I imagine it would be the same for DVI connections.
