The interior of the drawer is only about 22" deep, while the whole unit is 27" deep. Allowing 1 1/2--2" for the plastic liner and the steel, it would make sense to think that there is a 3" or slightly better gap at the back. The drawer doesn't pull out as a cabinet drawer would--there are no visible releases on the drawer slides, so I am guessing that you would have to disassemble it from the bottom. The underside looks like a piece of galvanized sheet metal held on with screws. The exterior of mine is black stainless steel; I'm not sure what the white pedestal is made from. Hope this helps.
