“Do I need to have the cable hooked up before the DVD player will work with the TV? Because right now the DVD player is connected to the TV and all I'm getting is "no signal" across the TV screen.”

You probably have the answer by now but did you try using the INPUT button on the remote? It looks like a curved line with a plug on the end. You keep pushing the INPUT button until it gets to the port you're using for your DVD. Hope that works for you.
