Hi. Yes, this player WILL play 4k DVDs. The problem with your Sony is that it was labeled as an UPSCALER - these devices do not play natively-4k releases. They are intended to "upscale" (hence the label) Blu-ray and standard DVD disks to 4K quality. The LG UBK80 is listed as a "4K Ultra HD Blu-ray PLAYER", meaning it will 100% play these disks. That is its intended purpose. I own my favorite childhood film in 4K HDR10 and played it on this with zero issue. Hope this helps!
