No. It actually does a pretest on the stuff you put in it. It does a shaky little cycle where it gently shakes your clothes (while they are still dry), then it cycles slowly and faster with the dry clothes, to test for balance. Once it is satisfied that it is balanced enough, it continues. If it is not satisfied, it lets you know. I have yet to receive a notification that it is off balance. It hardly moves at all even at the fastest spinning cycle. It does not move more than half an inch on both sides at its peak performance with very heavy clothes in it.

However, these LGs seem to have a real problem with out of balance loads. I have an 8-year-old LG that had a service call on it about 2 years into ownership. It continued to get out of balance, refill, try to re-balance, re-fill, etc. Finally, it wouldn't drain or spin and just flashed UE. After trying to use the diagnostics via LG's service number, they finally sent a service guy out. He essentially used the diagnostics, leaned the washer back against the wall and (as far as I could see) , he tightened a bolt. I wasn't charge for the service call (which was a surprise), apparently because this is a known problem. Well, it's lasted another 6 years and now it's doing the same thing and worse.
