These numbers refer to the refresh rate. The higher the number, the faster your screen refreshes the image on the screen. It is preferable to have at least 120 if you're watching action movies or sports. When the refresh rate is lower, sometimes you will see pixelation, where there are left over pieces of the image (artifacts) as something moves across the screen very fast. Hope this helps.

There is very visible difference in picture motion quality between 60hz vs 120hz. This tv is 60hz so don't buy it, there are tv with 120hz for the same cost on some really good brands.
