Not in my experience. I have used this stove regularly for three months without a silicone mat, and have not had any scratches yet. The Schott Ceran glass seems to be a premium high-strength cooktop surface. I think the glass is easier to wipe spills off than a silicone mat as well. Finally, the silicone mat can melt a little if you accidentally heat up an empty pot on it.
