“When used with a 5.1 sound bar such as the SP9YA to become a 7.1 system, do these speakers act as the side surrounds or rear surrounds, or is the behavior configurable? It would be odd to have the sound bar continue to play the rear channels.”

Per LG, when paired with a 7.1 system, these speakers become the side surround channels. But the "rear" surround channels are emitted from the soundbar itself, so it is not possible to have the rear sound in the rear with these speakers. The LG rep did not recommend these speakers for the SP9YA. But they'll work to spread around some of the sound, though not accurately.
