“These speakers are just playing background music and you can’t hear any other talking in a movie. Do I have something hooked up wrong or are these just for music? Thanks”

You have to use the Lg app to enable the rears. I didn't know this until I downloaded the app and enabled it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Dialog normally does not come the rear speakers. That's what the center speaker is for. When the sound is set to Movie or Surround, only background sounds or surround effects come out of the rear speakers. However if you set it to Music or another non 5.1 setting you will get the same sound out of all the speakers.

Only thing likr rain, gunshots, wind, etc. Surrounds aren't designed to play speech. They will play full sounds only if the receiver has a sound setting like "5-channel Stereo" or the equivalent.
