It needs existing WIFI, it is good for making something without a wireless capability get wireless. It is a good product. I don't know about the chromebook capability. Worked out of the box on windows.

This does not create a hotspot it's a WiFi receiver for device's that do not have built in WiFi

Hi, joechartreuse. The Linksys WUSB6300 USB Adapter cannot create its own hotspot. The functionality of this device is for you to be able to connect your PC/Laptop wirelessly. Check out this link for more details: https://www.linksys.com/us/p/P-WUSB6300/ . Also, it will not work with Chromebook OS. It is only designed to work with Windows OS.
