“I live in very rural area in house with metal roof. My internet is via a hotspot - I get very poor to nonexistent signal in my house on both my cell and the mobile hotspot. Will this help and is it all that I need or do I need other parts to go with it.”

It may help. Try choosing this device name on the wifi list and sign in with your usual password. Turn the wifi off on other devices (tv, computer, tablet, even other phones when not in use and then only connect them to your internet as needed. This should strengthen your signal. Try that before buying this device. You may not need it at all.
