As I understand, either could be set up as an access point to the other, but separate SSID would be needed for each band. I used my old router as a switch to help keep wired connections that I already had, especially since each Velop unit has only two Ethernet ports. Just turn off DHCP, and make sure the old router IP address does not conflict with Velop units. Having just one SSID is wonderful after having to use a dual band router with a dual band access point. Having four SSID names all over the house was a hassle.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.From my understanding and use, you can "connect" the first (base) unit to your EA8300 but it will not extend your current WiFi. It will create a new WiFi SSID that can then be extended with the remaining Velop units. The base must be connected to an existing network connection (cable modem or other router) via a wired connection. The remaining units can either be daisy chained to the base Velop via a RJ45 cable or the dedicate 5GHz channel the Velops use for inter-Velop communications.
