Hi, Bigdog. You will need a Modem or a Modem/Router for this to work as our Velops and routers are dependent from the internet coming from the modem. However, if you are referring to a hotspot of pocket wifi type, then it won't work.

I needed a cable modem / router as the only inputs on the Velop are ethernet. From the router a quick ethernet cable to the home node on Velop had everything going. It worked well to extend our wireless and worked really well when we used a MoCA adapter to make the third mesh "hardwired" in a hard to reach area of the property.
