You do have to set it up. You set it up with a tablet, laptop or smart phone. If you didn’t tell it your wifi name and password it wouldn’t be able to access your WiFi to extend it. But it does guide you through the steps.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No. I could never make it work. I was beyond disappointed. I tried to have the company's own tech walk me through the process. It could never "see" the WiFi in my home. They ended up sending me a replacement that I have not even opened. The whole experience was so frustrating, I would rather eat the thing than open the box and start all over.

You have to log in to it to set it up, and select "range extender" mode, and enter your password, etc., but it needs no other connection besides power to serve as an extender for your existing WiFi. You can log in to it wirelessly, or by temporarily using the network cable that comes with it and plugging it in to a laptop or other computer. You can even log in to it over WiFi from a phone or tablet. I had it up an running in about 10 minutes.
