Yes, you can use a Verizon sim card and use the phone. It was way easier to use the Verizon sim card than to get the phone number transferred.

I’m not sure if you can use the SIM card but you can use your Verizon number. When setting the phone up you’re given the option to keep the number you have and transfer it to the new phone.
