• Yes, the mouse is wired, and the batteries are needed so they can be charged while it's plugged into your computer.

• Nope - wireless mouse - uses Logitech "Unifying" receiver. Wireless performance is very good and so is battery life. You'll have to look elsewhere if you want a wired USB mouse.
