No, you plug the USB dongle into your computer so it's actually controlling your computer some people like myself use the tv as a second monitor. You can control other devices if you choose too but It will work perfectly for your purpose and save your PC keyboard from wear and tear or a cheap replacement for a Broken pc keyboard I love mine and if your used to a laptop touchpad your transition will be seamless. If your used to using a mouse I think you'll enjoy the 1 less piece of equipment once you get used to the built in touch pad. I highly recommend the Logitech 400 plus. Hope this answers your question
