The tablet "clicks" into place using a solid plastic rail on the bottom and two plastic tabs on the top corners. It does not use the "buttons" on the back. The case is "smart" in the sense that the keyboard is enable when the case is opened and secured to the keyboard base magnetically. If you prefer not to use the keyboard, it conveniently folds around back, and is not enabled - allowing you to grip the tablet in a more traditional way without worrying about keys being pressed.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It attaches via the plastic brackets (2 around the corners on the top, and then 1 on the bottom covering that edge), so it locks in that way, and resting the edge with the full bracket wakes up the keyboard so you can use it. I haven't really fiddled with repeatedly taking the tablet in:out of the brackets, because I bought it to stay in the case. I haven't noticed anything wonky with the GPS because of the magnets that hold the case shut.
