1. No markings. Only a fixed blue LED lits when you are rotating the control. 2. Not manually. The unit controls when to go to standby.

If connected to a PC... you can see the volume level in the taskbar speaker icon. You are correct about no visible bass level. It is easy to change quickly. Press the puck for 2sec and it switches to bass mode then dial in the bass. Press it again for 2 sec to go back to volume mode.
